IOWA’S PLAN FOR USE OF $516.7 MILLION IN CDBG DISASTER RECOVERY FUNDS APPROVED

Uses Include Buyouts, Housing Production, Business Assistance, Infrastructure and Flood Plain Mapping

(DES MOINES) — On Friday, Governor Chet Culver announced U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) officials approved Iowa’s action plan for $516.7 million in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding for the state’s recovery effort from the 2008 storms and floods.

The approval from HUD is an important step in moving this particular allocation of disaster recovery funding through the system and out to people and communities in need. The money will be used to fund activities such as buyouts and housing production, business assistance programs, infrastructure projects and updating flood plain maps.

Although the approval announcement came last week, the $516.7 million was included in the RIO’s disaster recovery funding charts when the allocation was announced in June. Iowa’s total CDBG allocation now stands at nearly $800 million to date.

Meanwhile, other disaster recovery funds continue to flow to Iowans impacted by the 2008 floods and tornadoes.

The chart below provides a snapshot of the latest funding information to date.
