GOVERNOR CULVER ANNOUNCES $94 MILLION IN INFRASTRUCTURE AWARDS FOR DISASTER RECOVERY
Awards part of $516.7 million CDBG allocation
(DES MOINES) – Governor Chet Culver announced that $94 million in federal funds for disaster recovery is being awarded to 49 projects in 41 Iowa communities hit by last year’s historic floods. The infrastructure awards are the first announced of the $516.7 million in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Disaster Recovery Funds.
“Infrastructure funding is vital to rebuilding the foundation of our flood-damaged communities and the flood recovery process,” said Governor Culver. “These CDBG funds, in conjunction with support from I-JOBS and FEMA, will help us rebuild Iowa to be stronger and safer for the future.”
The awards total $94,384,123, along with $72,237,728 in matching and/or local funds. Projects include water system improvements to eliminate the threat of contamination and sanitary and storm system improvements to protect residences from flooding and sewer back-ups.
On October 2, Governor Culver announced that the $516.7 million CDBG action plan was approved by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The plan was the result of months of work by state officials, and reflects the input of Iowans. With Secretary Donovan’s approval, state officials, Councils of Government, and Entitlement Cities will begin the process of contracting for the allocation of the funds.
