REBUILD IOWA COORDINATING COUNCIL MEETS TUESDAY
Council Members Will Focus on Legislative Proposals and Improvements to Disaster Recovery Process
(DES MOINES) – The Rebuild Iowa Coordinating Council will meet Tuesday from 10 a.m. to noon in the Assembly Room at the Iowa Department for the Blind, 524 Fourth Street in Des Moines to hear updates on, and discuss, a variety of disaster-recovery issues.
Members will discuss improvements to the disaster recovery process and focus on legislative proposals for the 2010 Iowa Legislative Session. The Council will also provide input to the Rebuild Iowa Office’s “Federal Recommendations” outline, which provides suggestions for ways the federal government can improve its assistance during the disaster recovery process. A complete agenda can be found on the Rebuild Iowa Office Web site at www.rio.iowa.gov/assets/meetings/2009-10-13_RIO_Coordinating_Council_agenda.pdf.
The Coordinating Council was created in House File 64, the same legislation that formalized the Rebuild Iowa Office. The Council will facilitate communication between state agencies, local governments and the Rebuild Iowa Office. The Coordinating Council consists of representatives from 18 state agencies, the Iowa League of Cities, the Iowa State Association of Counties, Council of Governments and four Iowa legislators.
This group is different from the Rebuild Iowa Advisory Commission (RIAC), which is a 17-member non-partisan Commission appointed by Governor Chet Culver. The RIAC was established on June 27, 2008, in the same Executive Order that established the RIO to coordinate all state recovery activities related to the 2008 summer disasters. RIAC members assist the RIO and the Governor in providing the vision, creativity and leadership to identify, prioritize and address the short- and long-term recovery issues.
